One Chinese athlete at the Beijing Olympics has just won the gold medal in forgetfulness. China's Zhang Liang showed up at the rowing venue to compete in the men's single scull competition, only to discover the event had already ended. He told reporters he arrived late because he thought he was in the third group of competitors when he was actually scheduled to compete in the second grouping.
Liang is now out of the 2008 summer games completely because, according to the rules of the International Rowing Federation, any athlete who fails to attend a race automatically forfeits his right to compete in other races. Zhang not only missed the single scull event, but also lost the chance to compete in the final of the double sculls for which he had already qualified with a teammate
